A Woman We Call ‘Meemaw’

This week we celebrate the most wonderful woman in our lives- my Mum, TinyHuman’s Meemaw. Monday was her birthday!

I did Mum dirty the day that I told her that she was going to become a Meemaw. I’d known at this point that I was pregnant for about 24 hours, and I was internally freaking out. My brain was doing that thing where now that it had found out that I was pregnant, I felt as though I was pregnant– I felt nauseous, my stomach felt funny, my boobs hurt, I just felt different.

Everytime that I have been sick since I was sixteen years old, my Mum has asked if I was pregnant. Now, I was actually pregnant. Sat in front of my Mum. Thinking “oh sh*t. I’m going to puke”. So I panicked… “Mum, I’ve got something to show you”.

We were at work, but I couldn’t keep it in. I’m an awful liar. I couldn’t let her find out that she was going to be a Grandparent by throwing up and then giving her awkward wide eyes as I try and avoid lying without telling the truth! Mum was going for a walk with an individual we supported, I waited until they left the room to get ready and I did it.

I pulled up the picture I’d taken shakily the morning before of my very positive pregnancy test, but she was in work mode. She asked if it was my colleagues. Quietly and hesitantly… “no, Mum. It’s not”. It took her a minute (the second longest minute of my life), and then it happened.

“IT’S MILLIE’S PREGNANCY TEST!!! OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD.”

She was instantly excited, flapping her hands and trying not to cry… then the individual came back and said they were ready and she had to go. A two hour walk later, she finally had a minute to take to process it. Mildly fuming that I’d told her just before she had to leave the house and completely and utterly elated she said “I can’t believe I’m going to be a Meemaw!”

Meemaw (noun):

another term for Grandmother, only cooler… WAY cooler.

I couldn’t have asked for a better Meemaw for my TinyHuman

The entire time that I was pregnant, my Mum was my support network. I couldn’t have done it without her.

Then the entire fourteen hours that I was in labour, she was on facetime talking to me- calming me down and reassuring me that I could do it even when I was absolutely adamant that I couldn’t. I desperately wanted her to be there but due to covid restrictions I was only allowed one birthing partner, so she stayed up all night on the phone.

Watching my Mum become a Meemaw has been one of the most incredible experiences I have ever had. Watching her love my son as I do, is a beautiful thing. He adores his Meemaw, he loves pulling her hair and playing nonsense games. TinyHuman has known who his Village are from a very young age, but it’s always been Meemaw that held the key to his beautiful little smile.

Meemaw’s Little Moonpie

Mum chose to be a Meemaw because “she’s too young to be a Grandma” and we already have a Nanny. There is nothing ordinary about Mum, she is an extraordinary human being and so it was only fitting for her to choose something different. She’s also a big fan of Big Bang Theory. So if she is Meemaw, then it’s only fitting that her favourite little TinyHuman is her Moonpie.

She calls me Moonpie, because I am nummy-nummy and she could just eat me up.

Sheldon explaining why his Meemaw called him Moonpie, and therefore the reason that TinyHuman is nicknamed Moonpie.

Meemaw deserves the world!

There is no gift that I could give my Mum that compares to what she deserves. She gave me the gift of life and continues to gift me by loving and supporting my little family more than I could ever wish for.

Throughout my journey into motherhood, she has been by my side ready to offer support and catch me as I feel like I’m falling. She answers the phone, knowing that on the other end she’s going to hear both me and TinyHuman crying. She looks after him a night a week so that I can work and they can bond. She is always there when we need her, and also just when we want her company.

Not just my Mum, but my best friend!

If I can be even half the Mum to my TinyHuman that she has been to me, then he will have a good life and I will be a good parent. She is my Mum, my role model and my best friend. She deserves the world, I can’t give her the world… so instead we bought lots of gnomes!

So, now we celebrate the most amazing Mum, Meemaw and Best Friend!
